HOLIDAY RETURNS
For many people the holiday period is a chance to recharge and experience a different culture for a short space of time. The fresh sights and food make a pleasant change from the daily grind and its always great to bring back fresh ideas and decorations for the home.
In much the same way music is a lovely way of bringing back the holiday memories and making them linger in the dark days of winter. There’s something about a song heard on holiday that seems to linger in the mind perhaps because the mind is relaxed and more perceptive or perhaps it’s the desire to experience fresh culture so this poses the question what defines the perfect holiday song?
A holiday song can be as simple as this lovely dance number by Dizzee Rascal. ‘Holiday’ with its dance vibe is classic Ibiza but with Dizzee Rascals masterful imagery and easy rap style it could be any pool side holiday or sunny break with your mates or your loved one. There’s something quintessentially relaxed about the song, putting aside the obvious cheesiness of the video, can’t help but make you want to reach for that chilled poolside beverage whilst on holiday or when you come back remembering that first poolside beverage.
Equally in as much as the song can set the vibe it can also bring out a new avenue of experience. So it is with this number by Servi dei Due Padroni, loosely translated as ‘servant of two masters’ from an Italian comedy from the 1700’s. This Italian band capture that ‘European sound’ with great aplomb. ‘No Star’ is a wonderful gem from the band, it harks back to the ‘Roxette style’ of power ballad but with the laid back style so typical of Italian music to such an extent that it could be argued this is modern Italian music, perhaps that compliment goes to far but there is something about this band and song that wants to be played on the long road trip through a country relying on an outdated map and a huge amount of luck, for a small band they pack a very strong holiday vibe.
Perhaps the perfect holiday song is something that reflects the culture of the country and is instantly identifiable and with that in mind the Gypsy Kings ‘Pharaon’ is Spain all over. The passion and Flamenco moves sing out and it simply asks you to dance along the office floor to the photocopier or to send that slightly cheeky email to the boss.
Ultimately it comes down to what the music brings to your holiday and what you want to take out of the songs you listen too, a sentiment Wham captured so well with ‘Club Tropicana’ after all on holiday ‘…drinks are free’ and should always be free!!!
Welcome back all with those happy memories.
